Run - Border run
28th October 2075-
Mr Johnson contacts the runners by commlink message. He wants to get the hell out of dodge.
The runners meet him in the Banshee, avoiding a tense protest/counterprotest between Humanis Policlub and Mothers Of Metahumans taking place in the heart of Kowloon. The Humanis ringleader, a tall man with an eyepatch and a waistcoat, notices the ragtag largely nonhuman runner crew, but beyond glaring does not allude to them, presumably due to the arsenal of weaponry they are carrying at this point.
The runners notice that he looks considerably ill. His offer is 50k nuyen to get him to an airfeld, Pok Tau Ha, north over the border in the Canton Federation. Leaving in the morning. Credsticks to be left with the Banshee as before. The runners do some asking around on the dangers on the trip - although Johnson wants protection, there should not be much default danger.
The runners concoct a plan to use Longtime as a ringer for Mr Johnson, and he purchases a cheap armoured suit, which could pass for Johnson's much nicer Armante number.
They agree to set off from the Banshee the next day. As they leave they see the protest
29th October 2075-
The crew pull up to the Banshee at 11am the next morning in Lomax's pickup and Context's Ares Humvee. After some negotiating, they convince Mr Johnson to change clothes - he puts on the slightly foxed knight errant corporate security gear stolen from facility GL586. Context Stanley and the suited up Longtime leave the Banshee loudly, drawing as much attention as possible. They drive off in the Ares Humvee taking the main highway to the Canton Federation.
A few minutes later, Arthur, Lomax and the real Mr Johnson leave more subtly, and take the Gopher pickup to Canton via secondary roads.
The word has got out about the transport, and a Hyundai sports car and battered GMC Bulldog approach the Humvee, weaving their way through the thick commuter traffic. Lomax's scout rotodrone picks them up notifies the runners. The pickup holding the real Johnson keeps clear on the side roads half a mile away, and the remaining runners fight off their unknown assailants. Stanley starts hacking the opponents drones, but Context conjures a physical barrier into a ramp ahead of the Bulldog. It fails to avoid the obstacle and gets flung into nearby traffic, damaging it and killing the rigger aboard.
The Bulldog van recovers and it's autopilot locks it onto the GridGuide, and it safely joins the flow of traffic, much to the chagrin of the remaining opponent on board.
With machine pistol chatter flying around, to little effect, the Hyundai sports car edges ahead of the runners Humvee, and cuts it off. The basic onboard pilot AI of the Humvee has no chance, and the vehicle swerves into the highway barrier and flips over.
The runners take a battering, especially Longtime, wearing his lighter armoured suit. Nonetheless he responds, crawling from the wreckage and headshotting the Hyundai gunner. Stanley quickly hacks into the sports car and slams on its brakes, sending the driver flying out the windscreen and into the busy motorway traffic. Safe, but badly injured, the runners consider their next move. Context sends the Ares home using its autopilot and Stanley brings over the Hyundai, having taken full control over it.
In the pickup, Athur, Lomax and the real Johnson make it to the Canton Federation border. At the border checkpoint, the vehicle is checked over. A large Lone Star troll with cybered arms, a shaved head, and red flame tattooed licking round his forehead approaches the vehicle. He briefly interviews them, and checks the SINs being broadcast, Despite being rather poor fakes, the scan is not deep and after a tense few moments, the troll waves them through.
They approach Pok Tau Ho airfield. It is remarkably quiet, and the runners see no signs of life. They pull up. A lone individual approaches the truck, in enclosed spec op armour. He does not realise the truck contains the real Mr Johnson, and simply demands they leave. The runners see a green Aztec idol logo on the armour sleeve, Arthur, in typical style, shoots him in the gut. He doesn't drop, but a second shots seals the deal. Further down the airfield, the runners notice an armoured car shimmer back out of invisibility. Clearly a corpmage has bigger things to deal with now. Lomax rigs into his Steel Lynx drone, kept under tarp in the rear of the pickup, and it dismounts and unloads its machinegun into the car, peppering it with bullets until all the tyres burst and the engine block busts into flame. The runners, unable to identify any further threats but sure there are plenty out there, remain at the truck. Mr Johnson is very nervous, and commlinks his VTOL extraction craft to warn them of the danger at the landing zone.
The Hyundai, plastered in gore and missing a windscreen, pulls up to the Canton Federation border crossing. The tattooed troll, smirking, saunters up to the sports car. Luckily for the runners, Lone Star are famously corrupt, and after some negotiation the runners carry on, 3000 nuyen lighter.
The second car finally gets to Pok Tau Ho. The previous runners are still at the Gopher pickup, wondering how to deal with the standoff. A loudspeaker calls out, demanding that the new vehicle gives up Mr Johnson - they still think Longtime is Mr Johnson. Stanley begins trying to search out the hidden opponents in the matrix.
To be continued....
